APS Legal is supporting Dementia Action Week

Once again, APS Legal & Associates are supporting Alzheimer’s Society. Every year, they unite communities with their Dementia Action Week campaign, which has a simple aim - to encourage people to take action to improve the lives of those affected by dementia.

In the UK,

  • Every three minutes, someone develops dementia
  • By 2025, one million people will be living with dementia
  • By 2050 that number will have doubled to two million
  • Women over 60 being twice as likely to develop it as men

Although dementia mainly affects people over 65, it can affect younger people, so helping your clients plan for their later life needs as well as what could happen if they lose capacity in their lifetime is a vital service.

Do you know the signs?

At APS, and as a dementia friendly organisation, we’re committed to educating people about Alzheimer’s disease.

Dementia isn’t a natural part of ageing, it’s a disease of the brain which may present itself as a range of symptoms, such as:

  • Memory loss that disrupts daily life
  • Challenges in solving problems
  • Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work or leisure
  • Confusion with time or place
  • Trouble understanding visual images or spatial relationships
  • New problems with words in speaking or writing
  • Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps
  • Decreased or poor judgment
  • Withdrawal from work or social activities
  • Changes in mood and personality

How to help

Although dementia is a leading cause of death in the UK, you can still live well with dementia and there a things you can do this Dementia Action Week, such as:

  • Run a Dementia Friends information session for your staff
  • Organise an information stand at your workplace
  • Have a conversation about dementia
  • Have quiet hours to help people with dementia access your services
  • Fundraise for Alzheimer’s Society

As an IFA, you are in a unique position to help raise awareness for a great charity while supporting people to take action and prepare for their later life needs, whether that’s writing a will, putting lasting powers of attorney in place or encouraging your clients, employees and community to talk to their loved ones about their wishes.
